Conference Great Outdoors of Design, GOOD'11

IDSL coorganised with their partners of Reach, Global Design Research Network, the conference "Great Outdoors of Design" (GOOD'11) in London, on the 23rd of September, as part of the London Design Festival 2011.
The partners, coming from different countries (Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Singapour, Spain, UK), shared their experience and discussed about the role of design research, during a day planned around presentations and group discussions.

Lieu du design, exhibition

Two IDSL projects have been presented at the exhibition "Objet(s) du numérique design d'un nouveau monde industriel", at Lieu du Design (Paris, France): the Intensity Player for Orange Labs (2008) and the Hacked Monqee for ReaDIYmate (2011).

Intensity Player, for Orange Labs, 2008:

The Intensity Player is one of the outcomes of the human-centred innovation process that IDSL set up for Orange Labs in 2008 for their strategy on "contents".

This new type of videoplayer enables to navigate in a video thanks to an emotional intensity graph. For instance, in the case of a football game, the graph is generated, in the short term, from the sound volume of the stadium and the ball possession (above the middle line for one team, below for the other team). The graph enables to visualise at first glance the intensity of the match and navigate with the tip of one finger to the most intense moments. A video summary can be easily created by adjusting the duration with a multitouch gesture, while always being sure to select the most intense moments.

Hacked Monqee, for ReaDIYmate, 2011:

ReaDIYmate is a new web platform that aims at democratising the creation, manufacturing and distribution of interactive objects connected to your digital life.
IDSL was asked to create a product "powered by reaDIYmate" for a Carte Blanche.
By reflecting on the strategy of this new service, we found strong similarities between their approach and the one from the "art toys" world. "Art toys" (also known as "designer toys") are made to be customised by artists and designers and selected designs are produced in limited editions. To connect the reaDIYmate community and the world of art toys fans, collectors and industry, we chose one of the art toys icons: the Do It Yourself Monqee. But, instead of the current pure graphic customisation of "art toys", we used reaDIYmate to provide the object with a behaviour, a personality through animated eyes. By doing so, we also wanted to explore for reaDIYmate the opportunity of selling kits of animated organs (here eyes) that people could put on their own objects.

This hacked Monqee is Wifi connected and can react to remote events or feed on online information. In its original version, it is by default sensitive to time. It can wake up and go to sleep with the sun. It animates every hour and every 15 minutes. You can also choose to have it take a nap for a set time. But it is an "open" object whose behaviour can change according to the applications developed by the reaDIYmate community.

ANVIE, innovation and virtual technology

The ANVIE, whose role is to mediate research in human sciences and companies, organised a workgroup on how virtual technology influences and changes how companies innovate and design, structured and moderated by Gilles Garel, Professor at CNAM, Chair in Innovation Management, and at Ecole Polytechnique.
Virginia Cruz and Nicolas Gaudron were speakers in the last session on innovation methodology and tools.

Social entrepreneurship, Global Social Venture Competition

In January 2011, Nicolas Gaudron was invited by ESSEC to mentor the Prakti Design team for the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC), organised by the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley.
During the global finals at Berkeley on the 8th of April, Prakti Design won the 2nd place in the Social Impact Assessment category.
Prakti Design is a social business company that develops easily replicable cooking stoves reducing fuel consumption and health hazards for the Bottom Of the Pyramid (BOP) families (currently in India, Haïti and Nepal).
